An Open Letter to the Elected Officials of Kentucky and Indiana

The closure of the Sherman Minton Bridge has had a devastating effect on Louisville and Southern Indiana communities and has damaged the backbone of the logistics industry that serves as an economic engine for the entire region.

Motorists throughout this region are experiencing first hand the impact of inadequate and failing infrastructure. It means added congestion, delay, pollution, accidents and injury. It is costing businesses thousands of dollars a day, as people and goods sit in traffic or are forced to endure miles of re-routing.

To meet the region’s transportation needs over the long term, we must expand our cross-river options, and there is a plan on the table to do so.

The Ohio River Bridges Project is currently held up by regulatory and legal bureaucracy.  We are asking our elected officials, like you, to work with President Obama and U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and ask them to speed the federal approval process for the Bridges Project and assist in any regulatory issues, to move this project forward quickly.

Furthermore, we ask that the Bridges Project become an immediate and top priority for state and federal funding. We acknowledge that the solution will require a combination of funding sources—including tolls—and by maximizing state and federal funding, those tolls can be fair and reasonable.

Business leaders have already stepped forward to offer private loans to help enable an immediate start of construction of the East End Bridge, the first component of the Bridges Project. We endorse that plan and urge you to work with your elected counterparts in Kentucky, Indiana and Washington D.C. to make it a reality.

For this region to succeed and prosper, we need expanded cross-river mobility – so, let’s get it started. Thank you for your help in solving this regional transportation crisis.

Sincerely,
